Show Notes

For the first episode of the 2021 Season, Clare is joined by Ben Taylor, founder of The English Lab (https://www.englishlab.com.au/) to discuss Emily St John Mandel's eerily prophetic novel 'Station Eleven'. The novel explores humanity's innate desire to find purpose in life, and presents an interesting hypothetical that forces the reader to consider what is truly important. The conversation explores this concept, and the problems that arise when individuals struggle to find purpose and understanding in a world that is crumbling around them. Further, there is a consideration of Mandel's possible criticism of a world that is saturated by technology, juxtaposed with the repercussions of a society devoid of the 21st-century comforts we take for granted, like medicine.  The motif of light in the text is considered, in a number of ways, reflecting how integral a students own interpretation is to an effective study of this novel.
